Sustainability Leaders in action at Expo 2020
In some recent posts I described what a Sustainable Leader is, what is the profile and the attitude towards Sustainable Actions that are benefiting our world in order to become greener.
Today without the intention to do politics, I want to observe what was declared at Expo2020 by the Leaders of Dubai, and analyze a bit from the Leadership perspective of their announcements.
While in Dubai, the Expo is going on the last 7th October, 2021 The United Arab Emirates announced the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, a national drive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, making the Emirates the first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) nation to do so.
It's a huge positive statement backed up with sustainable actions and an investment stream to make this happen, but it doesn't just take a good press release to make it happen. Most of the 15 years already invested in climate solutions in the UAE gives us confidence about the leadership that will be able to fulfill in the years to come. It is not only about money but also about leadership to transform that resource into things that support the success of people and the planet.
The initiative, announced at Expo 2020 Dubai with the attendance of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, aims to underpin dynamic economic growth alongside positive environmental impact.
Commenting on the announcement, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, said, "We are committed to seize the opportunity to cement our leadership on climate change within our region and take this key economic opportunity to drive development, growth and new jobs as we pivot our economy and nation to net zero. With an investment of over AED600 billion in renewable energy, our vision for a clean future is clear."
The declaration of the Leader unveils not only the ambition and the vision explaining clearly what it will mean for the people, what is in there for them, but also the resources that will be in place in order to be able to make the challenge happen. A clear way of communication that a Sustainable Leader must exercise.
What was interesting about the announcement is that not only is the main Leader to lead, but is his whole team, committed and engaged on Lead the path and look at this as well.
From his side, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said, "With our announcement today of our plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the UAE continues our effective role in climate control issues, adding our support to international efforts to mitigate climate change with a range of effective community and economic initiatives. In achieving climate neutrality in the UAE by 2050, we aim to develop an approach that both drives sustainable economic growth and is an example of working together to achieve a better future for humanity."
There is an interesting side of leadership, that can positively see the different angles, and in this case what is most important is thinking of the success of the people and planet, a clear purpose that comes close to my heart!
