Reinventing yourself through elections

Every choice we make, no matter how small it may seem at the moment, is a brick in the construction of the reality we inhabit. Life itself is a story woven with the decisions we make over time, each one opening doors that, if not crossed, would have changed the course of everything. In retrospect, every step, every change, even difficulties and crises, lead us toward a version of ourselves that, at some point, we couldn't even imagine.

As a child, I didn't understand the magnitude of those choices, much less how my circumstances at the time were going to influence the person I would become. My family moved constantly, and each new place represented not only a change of direction but also a new beginning. In the midst of that uncertainty, something in me was beginning to adjust. Over time, I discovered that this ability to reinvent myself, to build a new life from scratch, became my most valuable skill. What I didn't understand then, I see clearly now: in those moments of change, without knowing it, I was building my strength.

At first, it seemed like just an act of survival. Accepting uncertainty, adapting to change without prior notice, seemed a necessity imposed by circumstances. However, later, that same ability to find stability in the midst of chaos became a turning point. Being able to see each move not as a loss but as an opportunity to start over taught me to embrace the unexpected. Today I know that it was that ability to adapt that shaped me as a leader.

The decisions we make, from the most conscious to the impulsive, are what build our story. While we can't always foresee the impact of each of them, over time we can see how all of those choices have led us to be who we are. What at the time seemed like just a challenge, a series of obstacles, over the years is revealed to be a process of constant reinvention. Each of those moves, each new beginning, was a key piece in building the person I am today.

Now, as a transformational leader, I know that true strength is not in resisting change, but in learning to navigate it, to adapt with grace and courage, to be the driver of change and not to let change drive you. Because life is a continuous flow of decisions, of stories that intersect, of moments that restart. And every time we decide to take a step into the unknown, we are, unknowingly, rebuilding our reality, creating the future that we cannot yet see, but that will be the result of everything we have chosen up to this point.

"Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change." - Jim Rohn

Steve Jobs once shared a story about how a calligraphy class at Reed College, which seemed insignificant at the time, later influenced the typography design of the Apple Macintosh. It was a decision that, in hindsight, defined the aesthetic appeal of personal computing. Jobs' ability to connect seemingly unrelated experiences and adapt them into his vision for Apple is a testament to the power of our choices and their unforeseen impacts on our journey.

How have your life decisions shaped the person you are today? Leave me your reflections in the comments!

This first chapter of my book is precisely about how every step we take, every choice we make, redefines our reality and leads us to be who we are. If this reflection has resonated with you, I invite you to continue reading, because in the next pages, I will delve deeper into how decisions, both big and small, transform us and prepare us for the challenges that await us.
