The Circle of Trust: How do you give trust to the people you work with?

Creating a circle of trust at work can be one of your best choices.

Creating a circle of trust at work can be one of your best choices.

Change is a delicate and very emotional process that may happen everywhere, not only at work.

In your private life, for example:

  • when you make new friends,

  • when you move to a new location or,

  • when you take a new job.

It could even be a change in your marital status!

But an important thing to take into account is, when you are in a process of change, to understand how the Circle of Trust works (towards the others and towards you).

WHAT does “circle of trust” mean?

When you want to express, in a graphic way, who are the people that you trust the most, you can use this term. A circle of trust is a metaphor that groups your confidants inside an imaginary circle.

Naturally you have to let others come closer to you and this varies from person to person or even, in some cases, from culture to culture.

In some cultures, for example the circle of confidence is very open, and the trust is created quite rapidly because there are few pre concepts, mindsets and mental barriers to accept the other. However, in other cultures, the circle is so shut that to be able to create trust and confidence it can take a long, very long time... Or it could never happen.

The circle of trust is an imaginary circle around you and others.

How can you create a circle of trust in the workplace?

Confidence and trust in your team members is a must have in a process of change, but it does not come just like this. The person who prepares to use leadership for change needs to nurture confidence day after day: with small steps, codes, and messages this circle gets you closer to the heart of the people surrounding you. It gives you the opportunity to use leadership with example to show the others how to be an open leader.

To create a circle of trust it is important to listen to the others’ needs and be clear on your needs and your expectations, as well. It will require proactivity from both sides, and give out that extra mile in the relationship.

After some months in my new job, someone in the team told me: “You know, I’m starting to have confidence in you”. And I appreciated that a lot, because it means exactly that we are getting closer and letting each other into the circle of confidence in a natural way.

Create a circle of trust in the workplace, inside a leadership with trust environment. It takes time and has to be practiced day after day. But, in the end, it creates a unique work dynamic.
